Leaf Schedule/ 2011
First cycle now targeted for completion by year end

RICHMOND, Va – Upon review of the Vacuum Leaf Collection Program schedule issued by the Department of Public Works, Mayor Dwight C. Jones has revamped the first cycle of this year’s Vacuum Leaf Collection Program so that it targets a wrap-up date of December 31.  The cycle was initially to conclude in February.  Mayor Jones has asked for a stepped up effort however, especially in light of a potential heavy snowfall season.  “I think we can do better than some areas of the city not having leaves picked up for the first time before February,” said Mayor Jones.  “The Department of Public Works has revised the schedule and we will now be working to get the word out.  As always, inclement weather can interrupt our plans, but at least we have a good plan to start with and we can try to get ahead of some of the expected weather.”

The first cycle of the City’s annual Vacuum Leaf Collection Program is set to begin on Monday, November 14.  The second cycle will follow.  The upcoming schedule is as follows:

Residents are advised to rake leaves to the property line, but not into the street or gutter, ahead of the scheduled vacuum cycle.  Also, keep in mind that schedules can change as a result of inclement weather.

For those who bag their leaves, biodegradable brown paper lawn and leaf bags are recommended because they help reduce the carbon footprint since they can be recycled along with the leaves.  The city will pick up six bags of leaves year around on regular trash collection days.  There is no limit on the number of bags that will be collected during each neighborhood’s designated vacuum collection cycle.

City residents also can dispose of leaves on their own at several locations:  East Richmond Road Convenience Center at 3800 East Richmond Road; Maury Street Landfill at 2900 Maury Street; and The Powerline at 8600 Huguenot Road at the northwest corner of Chippenham Parkway.

The vacuum leaf schedule and information about other City services are available online at www.Richmondgov.com.  You also can listen to the schedule by calling the leaf hotline at 646-LEAF (5323).
