The Directory to Southampton was published every 2 years by the Southampton Rec. Association, and later by the Southampton Woman's Club. It was a combination telephone book, address book and street guide. The foreword in the 1970 Directory describes a few of its possible everyday uses, " Maybe the eldest daughter is anxious to learn the idenity of the teenage "Mr Wonderful" who recently moved in at the end of the block... or the "old man" is interested in organizing a car pool." Whatever the use it was a handy reference for our community at the time. There are still some Southampton residents that continue to use these directories and just pencil in updates !
These 6x9 booklets were also full of ads from local businesses, many of which have since disappeared. They included : Mary Marshall Garrigan School of Dancing (5063 Forest Hill Ave), Eddie's Meat Market, Gunter's Hardware ( where Crittertown is now located), An-Nita's Florist, Meldanbar Turkey Farm ( 2000 Southampton Rd.), Carroll's Shoe Store (5035 Forest Hill) and Harem House Beauty Salon (7127 Forest Hill).
Below are a few covers and some ads from inside. |
